Last Thursday, the president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, made a controversial statement during a meeting to promote trade and business deals with China. He said that the Philippines would get rid of the US. He even stated that he would join China’s ideology and plan to go to Russia for discussing with President Vladimir about making cooperation between the three countries.

Knowing that statement, the US is left in confusion as the Philippines and the US have had close and good relations so far. Conversely, the Philippines and China had series of problems due to a territorial issue in the South China Sea. As a result, Daniel Russel as the US wants to ask President Duterte about the clarity of his statement. Before this controversial statement, President Duterte also had said that he would end the cooperation between the US and the Philippines in military after getting criticism from the US about his severe attempts against drugs.

The issue between the US and the Philippines reminds me of a quotation from Winston Churchill saying “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”, which one of my lecturers told me. Maybe that quotation suits the situation between two countries. I suppose that after getting criticism from the US, the president of the Philippines has been growing the dispute with the US. Regardless the problem, I believe that everyone has freedom of speech as well as freedom of choice, and it means that everyone is allowed to criticize or suggest, but everyone also has rights to receive or refuse them. In conclusion, the Philippines’ president does not need to make it so serious that he wants to get rid of the good relations with the US.
