After being ratified a year ago, the Paris Agreement
has been finally applied. To celebrate the entry into force of this agreement,
the Eiffel Tower in Paris will be lit up in green light on Friday. There is
going to be a meeting held in Marrakech next week which is attended by
representatives from 200 countries to discuss further actions based on the
Paris Agreement. In comparison with the Kyoto Protocol, another major pact on
climate change issue, the Paris Agreement took shorter time to come into force.
However, the environmentalists still ask for nations’ more actions.
The Paris Agreement is the first treaty which unites
all nations regardless their conditions to overcome climate change issue,
albeit only few countries that really have commitment to conduct this
agreement. The rest simply desert the deal when it does not fulfill their
interest. Nevertheless, those countries are keeping an eye on the US elections
since it will influence the sustainability of the agreement. Hillary Clinton has
planned to support this agreement, and Donald Trump is going to do the contrary
by casting the Paris Agreement aside.
I am quite glad to know that the Paris Agreement has
come into force. I hope that it will continue to bring good progress to resolve
the climate issue. I also expect that despite the result of the US polls, other
countries having approved the agreement do not need to get affected. Instead,
they have to create the sustainable actions according to the Paris Agreement in
tackling the global issue of climate change.
